CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT FOR CHANGE

THE DOCUMENTARY

Our current project is a lifelong dream to create a documentary that would unite people of all races and help them discover their shared commonalities. By recognizing what we have in common instead of what divides us, I believe we can alter perspectives, potentially see each other in a new light or recognize a shared humanity.

The goal is to explore connections among individuals who may not have crossed paths otherwise, providing the viewers with the opportunity to experience what it’s like to engage with one another in a shared, safe space. Exposing people to what it feels like to be in an environment that encourages us to work together towards one common goal, often found in; sports, politics, unions, military, medicine, and music. This type of experience is usually only achieved by participating in or, in this case, letting people experience what that feels like through the stories of others - taking an inside look at the conversations and feelings surrounding these environments and what we can learn from them.

Cultural socialization has proven to be most consistent with positive outcomes. However, that is unlikely to happen organically without exposure or conversation. People are taught to assume that there are underlying personality traits that correlate to specific physical characteristics. Intergenerational teachings on racism can profoundly affect children early on and shape their beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. They are highly impressionable and learn from their surroundings, such as family members, caregivers, and communities.

Still, statistically, there is one thing out there that competes for attention and leads in the area of influence: screen time. On average, children spend anywhere from 7-9 hrs of screen time a day beginning as early as four years old. Even more so after the pandemic, we now utilize screen time to work, educate, communicate and entertain.

The digital world is the "new community"; it's how we get into households, classrooms and conversations. It's the primary source for bringing that inside experience of an environment that encourages and teaches us to look beyond skin color.

I hope to bring conversations to the surface that are typically left unspoken or only take place in restricted environments such as a locker room, a military base, a union strike, a medical facility, or in a private setting behind closed doors. This documentary is aimed at providing opportunities for learning and exposure by sharing meaningful interactions within these six environments. With the hope that it will be utilized to help infuse understanding and unity among all.

I am happy to write this letter in support of funding for the proposed documentary “An Environment for Change” which will take a deep dive into conversations that encourage working together and living together as one. We feel it is important to share these unique stories with our audience and are excited to support the film to the best of our ability.
